BREAST CANCER SCREENING INITIATIVE
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project aims to detect
early-stage breast cancer tumors through advanced image processing techniques,
minimizing human error in diagnosis. The key steps include:
- Image Preprocessing
- Image Segmentation
- Feature Extraction and Selection
- Image Classification
Roopaantar, in collaboration with
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is committed to improving healthcare
outcomes and raising awareness about women's health, especially related to
breast cancer.
Linkage with Roopaantar's Commitment
to SDGs
Roopaantar is aligned with the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the following:
- SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): The project aims to enhance early
diagnosis of breast cancer, improving healthcare access and reducing
mortality rates through timely intervention.
- SDG 5 (Gender Equality): As breast cancer disproportionately
affects women, this initiative promotes women's health, advocating for
equal access to quality healthcare services for all women.
- SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities): By ensuring better cancer detection,
this project works to reduce healthcare disparities, especially in
underserved and rural areas, where breast cancer awareness and early
diagnosis may be limited.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
·
Breast cancer is the
most common cancer in women globally and has become the leading cancer in
India, surpassing even lung cancer. In India, one woman is diagnosed every 4
minutes, and one dies every 13 minutes from breast cancer. Despite increasing
awareness, early detection remains a challenge, with many cases diagnosed late
due to human error and limited access to screening.
·
This project seeks to
address these challenges by using advanced image processing techniques
(preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification) to detect
early-stage tumors with higher accuracy and minimal human error. The goal is to
provide more reliable, accessible, and timely breast cancer detection,
ultimately reducing mortality rates and improving women's health outcomes
across India.
IMPLEMENTATION / EXECUTION
The project will provide free breast
cancer screenings to frontline health workers, including ASHA workers, ANMs,
and CHOs, as well as to the general public, under the Roopaantar initiative.
This effort aims to ensure widespread access to early detection, raising
awareness and promoting better health outcomes at no cost to participants.
FUTURE COURSE OF ACTION
Upon completing 3,000 screenings, we
will assess the results to identify key prospects and next steps. This will
include analyzing the causes and consequences of the findings, understanding
the challenges faced during the screening process, and developing strategies to
address and resolve any issues encountered.
