FROM TABOO TO TRANSFORMATION: RECLAIMING MENSTRUAL HEALTH FOR ADOLSCENTS GIRLS

About the Project

This project addresses Menstrual Health as a Critical yet often Overlooked Barrier to Girls' education and well-being. It introduces Sanitary Pad Vending Machines in schools and hostels to ensure round-the-clock access to affordable menstrual products, directly tackling absenteeism and dropouts caused by lack of supplies, stigma and low menstrual literacy. Alongside this, Sanitary Napkin Incinerators are co-located to enable Safe, Hygienic and Environmentally responsible disposal, supporting sustainable Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM). The initiative also delivers Menstrual Health Education and Awareness — IEC Materials for simpler understanding and Gynaecology Camps as resource guides to normalize conversations, break stigma and equip adolescent girls with knowledge about their bodies and available support systems, alongside Pain Management Kits for all students. Together, these components move menstruation from a taboo subject to a topic of open, informed conversation.

Linkage to SDGs

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Ensures access to menstrual products, pain management kits and health education, supporting adolescent girls' physical well-being.

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Reduces absenteeism and dropout rates by removing menstruation-related barriers to regular school attendance.

  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Empowers adolescent girls with knowledge and resources, challenging stigma and promoting dignity and equal participation in school life.

  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: Promotes safe and hygienic disposal of menstrual waste through co-located incinerators, supporting sustainable sanitation practices

Why This Project ?

  • Menstruation as a silent barrier to Education: Lack of access to sanitary products and pervasive stigma cause many adolescent girls to miss school or drop out altogether, quietly widening the gender gap in education.

  • Gap in awareness and Support Systems: Limited menstrual literacy leaves girls uninformed about their own bodies, often forcing them to navigate menstruation with fear, shame, or misinformation.

  • Disposal is an Overlooked Issue: Without safe disposal infrastructure, menstrual hygiene management remains incomplete and environmentally unsustainable.

  • Need for a Holistic Solution: Addressing access, disposal and education together — rather than in isolation — ensures the issue is tackled at every level, from infrastructure to mindset.

  • Long-term impact on girls' futures: Uninterrupted education and menstrual well-being directly shape girls' confidence, healthand future opportunities.

Impact

This project directly improves school attendance by removing menstruation-related barriers through accessible sanitary product vending machines and safe disposal systems. Adolescent girls gain confidence and comfort through pain management kits and reduced stigma, while menstrual health education fosters open dialogue and body literacy among students. Beyond individual well-being, the initiative reshapes school environments into supportive, stigma-free spaces, encouraging sustained education continuity for girls. Over time, it contributes to breaking generational taboos around menstruation, empowering young girls to pursue education without interruption or shame.
